International Day of Disabled People: Celebrating Easy Read!
Our Easy Read team at Disability Equality Scotland – Claire, Marit, and Shona – have been dedicated to creating Easy Read documents. They use plain English and pictures to make information clear and easy to understand.
At the same time, our Training Team, Sonya and Lilly, have been helping organisations learn how to make their own Easy Read materials.
About International Day of Disabled People
On 3 December 2025, the world marks International Day of Disabled People. This is a day to:
- Recognise the rights of disabled people
- Highlight barriers to equality
- Encourage action to remove those barriers
This year’s theme is about creating communities where disabled people can fully take part and society becomes fairer.
It means:
- Removing barriers
- Making sure everyone has the same opportunities
- Understanding that when disabled people are included, communities become stronger and fairer for everyone
The Role of Inclusive Communication
Accessible information is key to inclusion. Easy Read makes information clearer and easier to understand, helping more people access their rights, make informed choices, and fully participate in society.

We are proud to be part of the International Easy Read Community of Practice, which has created a free Easy Read Resource Pack to support organisations in making information more accessible.

Easy Read Standards Summary
Disability Equality Scotland also runs the UK Easy Read Standards Working Group. Our working group wants to make Easy Read Standards for the UK. Standards are rules for the best way to do something. We want all Easy Read to be done in the best way, recognising that different readers need different things.
