Our joint open letter about accessible news in the UK

Disability Equality Scotland organised a joint open letter to Lisa Nandy MP, UK Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.

The letter is about the need for UK broadcasters to produce accessible news for people with a learning disability and anyone else who needs it.

The letter was signed by 54 individuals and organisations across the UK.

We believe that the BBC Charter should include accessible news as a requirement of the BBC’s output.

In many other countries, the national broadcaster produces accessible news. You can find out more about this in this research report by William Kremer, a BBC producer and reporter.

We have deliberately written our joint letter in Easy Read – an accessible format preferred by many people with a learning disability, and others. This is to show what accessible communication looks like.
