Easy Read versions published for Scottish Government Family Law consultation

We have produced Easy Read versions of a new Scottish Government consultation on Family Law, helping more people understand the proposed changes and share their views.

Family law affects many aspects of people’s lives, including relationships, separation, marriage, and legal rights after a partner dies. Making this information accessible is essential so that everyone can understand what is being proposed and take part in decisions that affect them.

The consultation asks for feedback on several suggested changes, including:

• the rights of people who were living together when they separate

• the rights of someone whose partner dies without leaving a will

• the minimum age someone can get married

• making it easier to divorce when there are no concerns about arrangements for young children

• the rules for organisations that can carry out marriages

The consultation is open until 21 April 2026, and anyone can take part.

We created Easy Read versions to support people with learning disabilities, people who prefer information in a simpler format, and anyone who finds standard consultation documents difficult to understand. Easy Read uses plain language and images to explain information clearly and accessibly.
